Hello, I'm Jo Allen founder of Pardus Counselling and Psychotherapy. Pardus comes from pardus panthera - Latin for leopard. I believe that just like the leopard, we all have the potential to change our spots. This could mean addressing our thoughts, emotions and behaviours.
I studied at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI) in Nottingham, gaining a BSc in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am a registered member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), and abide by their ethics and principles. I am currently working towards BACP accreditation.
I work in Spondon and Derby City Centre, seeing clients with varying issues. I offer short term counselling and long term psychotherapy to individuals over 18 years of age.
My clinical work is supported by professional supervision and I attend regular training to make sure I am up to date with current practises and ethical standards.
I have experience of working for counselling charities in Derby, as well as working with various Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) providers, offering short-term therapy to employees of different companies with personal problems and/or work-related problems.
Change is often what motivates people to access therapy. You may want to change how you act or feel in certain situations. Or, maybe you are struggling to adjust to a life changing event and need support.
I believe that change takes place in a supportive and collaborative relationship, and I offer this by providing you with a warm and non-judgemental space to talk.
Common problems that people bring to therapy include, but are not limited to:
Sometimes, you may not even know what has brought you to therapy - this is common too! In our initial consultation, we can discuss what you might need and work it out together.
I draw on several recognised modalities in my work such as Psychodynamic theories, Person-Centred Theory, Gestalt, attachment theories and trauma work, as well as using techniques such as mindfulness and creative interventions.
I have a special interest in trauma, and illnesses such as CFS/ME and Fibromyalgia and work holistically with the whole person to assess what you might need.
I offer a FREE 15 minute phone call to briefly discuss what you might need from therapy. We can then arrange an initial consultation. I charge £45 for a 60 minute session, including initial consultations.I require at least 48 hours notice for cancellations - if it is less than 48 hours then I will still charge full fee. Please note that due to the therapeutic nature of my work, I am only able to work weekly, and not fortnightly.
I work in Spondon and Derby City Centre. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements, including any accessibility issues.
"I felt comfortable as soon as Jo opened the door and I saw her smile. I only wanted a limited number of sessions and knew what I wanted to work on. Jo was able to do this and brought new insight into how my childhood impacted how I feel as an adult"
"You have really helped me after years of trying to cope with medication or on my own. I can't say enough how much the counselling has changed my life. Thank you."
"Very lovely environment, calm and relaxing. Jo never made me feel rushed or insignificant. I believe I've thoroughly benefited from counselling - Thank you very much!"
My practise has good transport links, with close proximity to the A52, A50 and M1. I am also on bus routes from Derby and Nottingham. My Spondon practise has free off road parking.
