About me

Why choose therapy?

Why choose therapy?

Hello, I'm Jo Allen founder of Pardus Counselling and Psychotherapy. Pardus comes from pardus panthera - Latin for leopard. I believe that just like the leopard, we all have the potential to change our "spots". This could mean addressing our thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

I studied at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI) in Nottingham, gaining a BSc in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am an accredited member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), and abide by their ethics and principles.

I work in Spondon, seeing clients with varying issues. I offer short term counselling and long term psychotherapy to individuals over 18 years of age. During the Coronavirus pandemic, I am offering therapy via telephone, Zoom and Skype. Please get in touch for more information.

My clinical work is supported by professional supervision and I attend regular Continuing Professional Development courses (CPD) to make sure I am up to date with current practises and ethical standards.

I have experience of working for  counselling charities in Derby, as well as working with various Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) providers, offering short-term therapy to employees of different companies with personal problems and/or work-related problems.

I also offer training to other professionals on working therapeutically with CFS/ME and Fibromyalgia - please get in touch for more information.

Change is often what motivates people to access therapy. You may want to change how you act or feel in certain situations. Maybe you are struggling to adjust to a life changing event and need support.

I believe that change takes place in a supportive and collaborative relationship, and I offer this by providing you with a warm and non-judgemental space to talk. I am committed to helping you explore the challenges that you may be facing and to support you in finding the best way forward.

Common problems that people bring to therapy include, but are not limited to:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • bereavement
  • trauma
  • health problems
  • stress
  • relationship problems.

Sometimes, you may not even know what has brought you to therapy - this is common too! In our initial consultation, we can discuss what you might need and work it out together.

I draw on several recognised modalities in my work such as Psychodynamic theories, Person-Centred Theory, Gestalt, attachment theories and trauma work, as well as using techniques such as mindfulness and creative interventions.

I have a special interest in trauma, and illnesses such as CFS/ME and Fibromyalgia and work holistically with the whole person to assess what you might need.

I offer a FREE 15 minute phone call to briefly discuss what you might need from therapy. We can then arrange an initial consultation. Initial consultations cost £50, and  subsequent sessions are charged at £50 for a 60 minute session. I require at least 48 hours notice for cancellations  - if it is less than 48 hours then the full fee is still charged.

I work in Spondon. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements, including any accessibility issues.

"I felt comfortable as soon as Jo opened the door and I saw her smile. I only wanted a limited number of sessions and knew what I wanted to work on. Jo was able to do this and brought new insight into how my childhood impacted how I feel as an adult"

"You have really helped me after years of trying to cope with medication or on my own. I can't say enough how much the counselling has changed my life. Thank you."

"Jo has been nothing short of outstanding in all my time working with her. I can honestly say she is one of the main reasons I feel like the person I am today & the person I want to be. Thank you."

"Coming and seeing Jo has really benefitted me. I can see the improvement in myself as can others. Thank you Jo."

"I feel I have made real progress in the time I have been coming to counselling with Jo. Truly grateful- thank you!"
